Outside Contenders For Super Bowl LIII MVP Award
The quarterbacks of the Super Bowl draw the most attention when it comes time to awarding the MVP of the contest. Seven out of the last 10 awards have been given to the signal-callers, even though there have been performances that have merited the prize.
Von Miller was the last non-quarterback to win for his two-sack performance in Super Bowl 50 to guide the Denver Broncos to victory over the Carolina Panthers. The most surprising win came when Malcolm Smith took the prize for his pick-six of Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLVIII in the Seattle Seahawks’ triumph.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady holds the record for most wins, with four to his name, and he will be looking to extend his record in Super Bowl LIII.
We’ll now look at players that have an outside chance of preventing him or his opposite number Los Angeles Rams’ Jared Goff from claiming the prize.
CJ Anderson
Anderson has stepped into the breach for the Rams due to Todd Gurley’s injury. Sean McVay has handed more responsibility to the veteran over his team-mate in the post-season and has not been disappointed. Anderson was the driving force behind their win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round, rushing for 123 yards and two touchdowns. The 28-year-old had a quieter time of things in the NFC Championship Game as the New Orleans Saints managed to bottle him up.
Anderson does have a good history against the Patriots during his time with the Denver Broncos. In an overtime win in the 2015 term, he ran in for the game-winning score that would be crucial in Denver’s journey to Super Bowl L. New England have had their issues against the run and Anderson has the ability to take on their linebackers in the hole for potentially huge gains.
LeGarrette Blount had success in Super Bowl LII. The 28-year-old has shown a similar burst and the form of the Rams’ offensive line could be able to open up space for him to thrive. Controlling the ball might be more important than the churning up huge yards on the ground, keeping the ball away from Brady. A 100-yard performance from Anderson could see him get the nod for the award at odds of 23.00Bet €100 to win €230022/1Bet £100 to win £2300+2200Bet $100 to win $230022.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$230022.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp2300-0.0455Bet RM100 to win RM2300 with 888Sport.
Rob Gronkowski
Gronkowski could be playing his final match in the NFL and it would be fitting for the future Hall of Famer to go out on the highest of notes. The 29-year-old would have been a candidate to win Super Bowl MVP last year when he produced a brilliant performance, notching 115 yards and two touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles.
New England’s defeat prevented a debate between the tight end and Brady as to who would win the award as Nick Foles claimed the prize. Gronkowski has not been at his best in the campaign, struggling with injuries and form. He still recorded over 500 yards and three touchdowns, which would be a good year for an ordinary tight end.
However, Gronkowski is a transcendent player and his statistics are well below the standard expected of him. The 29-year-old found a semblance of his best form in the AFC Championship Game by making crucial catches on third down.
He has not found the endzone since the Patriots’ defeat to the Miami Dolphins and that will have to change for him to come into consideration. The Rams have struggled against tight ends this term and it could lead to another huge Gronkowski performance on the biggest stages. Back him at 51.00Bet €100 to win €510050/1Bet £100 to win £5100+5000Bet $100 to win $510050.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$510050.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp5100-0.0200Bet RM100 to win RM5100 to be named Super Bowl MVP at Bet365.
Aqib Talib
Talib will be one of the key defensive players that will be determined to make a difference on Sunday. Aaron Donald gets the headlines on the line, rushing the quarterback, but he will need time to get to Brady in the pocket. Therefore it’s crucial that Talib and his team-mates on the back end hold up against the Patriots’ wideouts, tight ends and running backs. The 32-year-old has been one of the best defensive backs in the NFL over the last seven years.
He will be locked up with one of the Patriots’ wideouts on the outside and may not be overly tested by Brady, who is more than aware of his quality. Talib played for the Patriots for two seasons and then featured against them for the Denver Broncos in the 2015 AFC Championship Game.
The cornerback has made his reputation on making big plays and as Smith proved against the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, one play might be good enough to win the award. An interception returned for a touchdown in the mould of Robert Alford’s for the Atlanta Falcons against Brady in Super Bowl LI could hand Talib the prize at odds of 81.00Bet €100 to win €810080/1Bet £100 to win £8100+8000Bet $100 to win $810080.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$810080.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp8100-0.0125Bet RM100 to win RM8100 with 888Sport.
James White
White will feel that he had an excellent claim to win the Super Bowl MVP award in New England’s triumph over the Atlanta Falcons. He scored three touchdowns in the contest, including the game-winner in overtime. The 26-year-old was on form in the Super Bowl last season, scoring another touchdown with a long run through the Eagles’ defense. When the games get bigger, White’s performances tend to soar. He equalled the NFL record for most receptions in a playoff game with 15 in New England’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Divisional Round.
He has become one of Brady’s most trusted targets in the clutch moments. White seemingly has a favourable matchup in the contest against the Rams’ linebackers. Mark Barron and Corey Littleton have struggled in coverage and had their issues against Alvin Kamara in the NFC Championship Game. Brady will go to White often and he could reel off another special performance on the big occasion.
