Chiefs To Get Back To Form Against Bengals
The Kansas City Chiefs have a test of character against the Cincinnati Bengals as the club look to bounce back from their first defeat of the 2018 campaign.
Kansas City were beaten for the first time this season by the New England Patriots last time out. Tom Brady led a late drive downfield in the final two minutes of the contest at Gillette Stadium, allowing Stephen Gostkowski to kick a game-winning field goal.
Patrick Mahomes enhanced his reputation going score-for-score with the best quarterback in the history of the game in the second half. However, not even his and Tyreek Hill’s brilliance was enough to keep the Chiefs’ unbeaten record alive.
Andy Reid’s men cannot allow the defeat to stymie their progress with the Bengals arriving at Arrowhead Stadium. Cincinnati suffered their own agonising loss at the hands of their bitter rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Andy Dalton and Joe Mixon appeared to have done enough to hand the Bengals an important victory in the AFC North, only to be thwarted by Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown in the dying seconds of the contest. Marvin Lewis’ side cannot afford another defeat in their bid to control their division.
Kansas City Chiefs
Although the Chiefs were beaten by the Patriots last week, ending their five-game winning streak, Reid would have been pleased with the fight that his team displayed in the second half. Kansas City were seemingly out of the game at the interval, trailing 24-9. However, Mahomes connected on a deep strike to Kareem Hunt to spark the comeback. His three touchdown passes to Hill then put the Chiefs within touching distance of a six-straight victory.
The defensive frailties were exposed by Brady in the closing moments of the match as he connected with Rob Gronkowski to set up the field goal. Reid got contributions from all of his key players on offense, especially Hill who tormented the Patriots with his acceleration. The Chiefs have to take the positives from the game that their fledgling quarterback held firm amid the pressure. Although he threw two costly interceptions in the first half, the 23-year-old more than held his own against Brady.
Kansas City had an identical start to last season, winning their opening five games. However, their defeat at the hands of the Steelers started a run of one win in six matches. Their poor form cost them a bye in the playoffs and resulted in their exit at the first hurdle in January. They cannot afford to let the same thing happen this term.
Their offense is a stronger unit this campaign being led by Mahomes, although their defense is a major concern as the Patriots did not need to punt last week. Justin Houston and Eric Berry were huge misses and could be the difference if the two sides were to face off again in the post-season. However, as long as the defense continues to allow yards and points aplenty, Kansas City’s quest for a first-round bye in the post-season is under threat. They have to hold their own against Dalton and the Bengals.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals had a parallel experience to the Chiefs last week, failing to win a meaningful game against a rival. Pittsburgh have dominated Cincinnati in their AFC North showdowns and once again made the plays when it mattered the most to defeat their rivals. With the game on the line Roethlisberger marched his team downfield to connect with Brown to stun the home fans in Paul Brown Stadium.
A win for the Bengals would have been huge in the division, putting the Steelers in all sorts of trouble. However, Mike Tomlin’s men got a game back on Cincinnati and now have tie-breaker. The balance of power in the AFC North remains with the Steelers, while the Baltimore Ravens’ form has put further pressure on the Bengals to keep the win column ticking over.
Dalton was impressive last week, orchestrating a late drive to hand his team the lead. He threw two touchdowns in the contest – both to Tyler Boyd, who has become a reliable target for the Bengals downfield. AJ Green has not lost any of his ability even at the age of 30, producing another strong outing against Pittsburgh.
Mixon might be the most important player for Cincinnati this week. He has been on form running the ball, rushing for 336 yards at 4.7 yards per carry. The Chiefs have a weak defense against the run and he will be needed to rack up the yards as well as keeping Mahomes and company off the field. Cincinnati’s execution on offense will have to be flawless.
Lewis would have been disappointed by his side’s failure to stand up to Roethlisberger, Smith-Schuster and Brown late on. They performed well for the majority of the game, but crumbled in the clutch. They will have their work cut out for them against the Chiefs. Limiting Mahomes and his team-mates to under 30 points will be an achievement. Discipline is a huge issue for the Bengals’ defense and Kansas City will have no problem exploiting them should the visitors lose their cool.
