Eagles To Get Back On Track With Giants Win
The Philadelphia Eagles need to get back to winning ways against the New York Giants on the road after suffering their second defeat on the bounce in the 2018 season.
Doug Pederson’s men lost the rematch of their NFC Championship Game against the Minnesota Vikings, dropping the reigning Super Bowl champions to 2-3 in their campaign.
Carson Wentz had a solid day passing the ball downfield, but it was not enough for his team as for the second week on the bounce the offense failed to put sufficient points on the board.
The defense has also had issues, with the secondary being cut open by Marcus Mariota and Kirk Cousins in back-to-back matches. They cannot afford to continue to struggle against the Giants.
New York battled hard against the Carolina Panthers on the road. They were unfortunate to lose as Graham Gano kicked a huge 63-yard field goal to secure the victory for the Panthers in the dying seconds of the contest.
Eli Manning again was inconsistent as Odell Beckham Jr was called on to throw downfield for a touchdown strike early in the game. Beckham did not give a glowing endorsement of his quarterback before the match and there could be signs of unrest if the Giants drop to 1-5 by losing to the Eagles.
It’s an important game in the NFC East – one which neither side can afford to lose.
New York Giants
The Giants battled hard against the Panthers, displaying character on the road. However, Gano’s field goal condemned them to their fourth defeat of the campaign. Another loss would drop them to 1-5 on their season all but ending any hope of them competing in the playoffs. It would take a special effort from that point, although there is talent on the offense to pull off the feat. Beckham has been good since his return from injury, although he has lacked his usual explosive plays downfield. It has been a combination of solid coverage and the struggles of Manning to push the ball into the deeper areas of the field. Frustration appeared to be getting the best of Beckham with comments made about his quarterback before the game.
Time will tell how long he can continue to hold back his emotions, especially if New York head towards another losing campaign. Saquon Barkley and Beckham connected for one of the plays of the season. The wideout threw the ball across the field on a trick play for Barkley to score. Although the play was impressive, the Giants cannot continue to rely on those sort of scores to prop up their offense. The pressure is on Manning to deliver. Former head coach Ben McAdoo pulled him from the line-up last season, and even though his statistics have been good enough, Pat Shurmur may have to address his form sooner rather than later.
Manning and the offense’s problems are magnified due to the issues on the defensive side of the ball. New York have notched only six quarterback sacks this term. The club are sorely lacking a pass-rush to put pressure back on the opposition. Olivier Vernon’s absence is looming large as Kerry Wynn and Mario Edwards have struggled in relief off the edge. It has been the key factor in their defeats that the opposition has managed to trouble Manning whereas the Giants have barely laid a finger on their quarterbacks. It will have to change against Wentz and company on Thursday.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are beginning to understand that being the hunted team at the top of the NFL is a tricky proposition. Pederson and his side are getting the best efforts of every team they have faced and it’s proving to be a hard slog for the reigning Super Bowl champions at the start of the term. Minnesota earned their revenge for their defeat in the NFC Championship Game as Cousins put on a clinic to defeat the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Philadelphia’s defense has struggled in big moments this season. It’s nothing that was not an obvious problem in the last campaign, although on this occasion their offense has not been able to pick up the slack. Cousins and Mariota found space in the same way Tom Brady was able to exploit in the Super Bowl. However, Wentz and the offense have not hit their stride yet, resulting in defeats rather than victory.
Outside of Ronald Darby and Malcolm Jenkins, the Eagles have huge issues in their secondary. Sidney Jones and Jalen Mills have been picked part time and again. Rasul Douglas and Avonte Maddox could be called into action to replace the ailing duo. The pass-rush that looked promising in the off-season due to the collection of quality has not been able to get home with regularity as of yet. If they are able to provide consistent pressure then it could turn the tide.
Wentz has been solid over the last two weeks, although he has not been able to do enough with the offense to turn narrow defeats into victories. He has passed for over 300 yards and boasted a completion percentage over 60 percent. However, the pressure has now been elevated on his arm due to a season-ending for Jay Ajayi. The 25-year-old will have to raise the standard of his game to match the level of his contemporaries around the NFL. Fair or not as he continues to slowly get back to form after tearing his ACL last term.
Betting Options
Both teams will enter the game with reasons why they are more than capable of emerging with the victory. Although the Eagles have been far way removed from the side that won the Super Bowl last season, they’ve still been in competitive matches every week.
New York displayed signs that they were finding a semblance of offense against the Panthers, only to fall victim to a controversial late drive from Cam Newton and company before Gano sent his 63-yarder through the posts. Wentz is the stronger quarterback of the two players in this game, edging his battle with Manning.
