Will England Respond To T20 Defeat At Trent Bridge?
India put forward a fine performance in their final T20 clash to defeat England to take the series courtesy of a brilliant innings from Rohit Sharma.
The Three Lions were inserted and were strong in the early stages of their knock as Jason Roy hammered the ball to the boundary. However, he lacked support from his team-mates as the home side stuttered, failing to capitalise on a promising platform.
England scored 198-9 in their 20 overs, although they left plenty of runs on the board as Hardik Pandya recovered from a poor opening spell to take four wickets.
In response India took the attack to the Three Lions, although Shikhar Dhawan failed to fire once again, being removed for only five. Lokesh Rahul also departed in the early stages of his innings.
However, Sharma took command to blast a century aided by his captain at the crease. Sharma blasted his century in 56 balls, getting over the line after falling for 94 in a contest against Ireland, to secure the win for his team.
All of England’s pace men were exposed, with all four seamers averaging double figures in their economy rates, which will be a concern heading into the one-day arena.
Eoin Morgan and his team will be determined to produce a response in the opening ODI of the series at Trent Bridge where last month they shattered the record for the highest total in the 50-over format.
England’s Top Batsman
The talent of England’s batting line-up has been the strength of their side. It was the driving force of their whitewash win over Australia as almost all of the key players fired. Alex Hales, Jonny Bairstow, Morgan and Roy were all operating at the peak of the powers. Roy and Bairstow formed a powerful tandem at the top of the innings. Hales and Morgan have played their part in the middle order, while Buttler has been outstanding thus far in the campaign.
There’s one man that has not quite fired this term, which is very surprising. Joe Root has struggled for runs, while he was left out of the T20 side for the final match of the series. The 27-year-old has been one of the leading batsmen in the world since his arrival into the international arena. Root has displayed signs of problems in his game since inheriting the Test captaincy.
He faces an important series ahead of him to find his peak form ahead of the Test matches. Root has an impressive record in the 50-over game and has the technique to adapt to India’s pace bowlers and spinners. Back him to lead the way for the Three Lions with a composed knock in the middle at 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450 with 888Sport.
India’s Top Batsman
The majority of India’s line-up have impressed already on tour, with two players blasting centuries in the opening three matches of the tour. Rahul and Sharma both notched centuries in the shortest form of the game, highlighting their prowess with the bat. The tourists will need their line-up operating at the peak of their powers to match England’s batsmen. After a couple of underwhelming knocks in the middle, Sharma delivered on his potential. The 31-year-old is one of the leading ODI batsmen in the world, although he has struggled to perform against England.
He averages only 33 in nine matches against the Three Lions, scoring two fifties. It would be the perfect opportunity to build on his match-winning display at Bristol. Sharma can capitalise on his position as opener to take the attack to the home side from the off. England’s pace bowlers failed to contain India in the T20s, and although there will be changes to the bowling unit expect Sharma to target the early overs once again. His knock proved his form and back him to lead the way once again at odds of 4.75Bet €100 to win €47515/4Bet £100 to win £475+375Bet $100 to win $4753.75Bet HK$100 to win HK$4753.75Bet Rp100 to win Rp475-0.2667Bet RM100 to win RM475 with Betway.
England’s Top Bowler
England’s bowling unit had a day to forget at Bristol as all four seamers were planted around the ground. Even Liam Plunkett, who has been the Three Lions’ senior man, was taken apart by the India batsmen, while David Willey, Jake Ball and Chris Jordan all put forward poor performances. Ben Stokes on his return to the side from injury only bowled two overs and provided control.
However, he was underused by Morgan due to concerns over his durability in his first match back. Mark Wood returns to action after being rested and will give England a boost with his additional pace at the top of the innings. The contest comes too soon for Chris Woakes, who is slowly being guided up to speed after suffering a quadriceps injury.
Wood needs to deliver on his potential. On the surface he has all the attributes to become a stellar performer for Morgan’s men. His averages in both Test and ODI matches are in the forties – too high for a player of his calibre. Back him to start his series against India on a high note with a strong performance at Trent Bridge with odds of 5.00Bet €100 to win €5004/1Bet £100 to win £500+400Bet $100 to win $5004.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$5004.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp500-0.2500Bet RM100 to win RM500 with 888Sport.
India’s Top Bowler
Pandya came to the fore for his team when they needed a performance to stymie England’s momentum. His four wickets prevented a late charge from the Three Lions, restricting the home side to a score of under 200.
It proved to be decisive in the game to allow India to chase down the total with seven deliveries to spare. Quality bowling has been the difference in the tourists’ two victories and it will have to be again during the ODI series to keep England’s batsmen on the back foot.
Kuldeep Yadav’s leg-spin was vital in the opener and expect him to play a vital part again to take pace off the ball, especially on a ground where England thrive. Take him to lead the wicket column at odds of 3.60Bet €100 to win €36013/5Bet £100 to win £360+260Bet $100 to win $3602.60Bet HK$100 to win HK$3602.60Bet Rp100 to win Rp360-0.3846Bet RM100 to win RM360 with Betway at Trent Bridge.
Match Verdict
England bounced back from their first defeat in the T20 series so expect them to come out firing at Trent Bridge. On their last appearance at the venue they broke the record for the highest ODI total, blasting 481 in their 50 overs against Australia. They will be determined to make a statement to prove their quality as the number one ranked side in the world. Back England to get the win at odds of 1.80Bet €100 to win €1804/5Bet £100 to win £180-125Bet $100 to win $1800.80Bet HK$100 to win HK$180-1.25Bet Rp100 to win Rp1800.8000Bet RM100 to win RM180 with 888Sport.
