England To Wrap Up ODI Series At The Oval

September 26, 2017

England crushed the West Indies in the third one-day international at Bristol to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Moeen Ali was the star of the show for the Three Lions. The 30-year-old blasted a century off just 53 balls – the second fastest by an Englishman – which guided his side to insurmountable total of 369.

The Windies attempted to respond through Chris Gayle, who blasted the England bowlers around the ground. However, once he was removed the tourists’ innings collapsed to a 124-run defeat.

Liam Plunkett did the damage with the ball for the home side. He continued his impressive year with a five-wicket haul, tearing through the Windies’ middle order.

Adil Rashid also notched three wickets reaffirming his position as the top spinner in the ranks.

England can wrap up the series with a victory at The Oval, which could be their eighth triumph in their last nine series. The Three Lions’ only defeat has come away in India, highlighting their transformation since their humiliation in the 2015 World Cup.

Eoin Morgan will be desperate to wrap up the victory without losing a contest, which would take the team Down Under in two months with momentum.

The West Indies may have one eye on the plane home as the cooler climate of England in September is not ideal for even the hardiest of players. However, Jason Holder’s men can still draw the series, but have to click into gear at The Oval.

We’ll now break down the contest using the latest betting odds.

Ali was the star man for England at Bristol. He started his innings slowly before exploding into life in the latter overs. He notched his half-century off 41 balls, but then carnage ensued as he blasted his next 55 runs off 12 deliveries. The assault included a run of eight sixes of just 14 balls, highlighting the quality of his timing at the crease.

The 30-year-old was the key in securing the victory as without his special knock England may have been vulnerable to Gayle’s onslaught. Ali has been an underrated player during his international career, but his century was his third in his 61 matches. The fact that he has scored so many runs late in the order has proven his importance to Morgan’s men along with his off-spin.

He was needed to score the run as the top order failed to cover themselves in glory. Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Jos Buttler and Morgan all fell relatively cheaply. Joe Root and Ben Stokes rebuilt the innings with two solid half-centuries, although both failed to kick on to get three figures.

Morgan and Buttler have been quiet in the latter half of the summer, but both players are too good to be held in check indefinitely. The onus has been on Root, Hales and Bairstow at the top of the innings to score runs, but at number four Morgan should have an opening sooner or later.

In 12 matches at The Oval the 31-year-old averages 60.62, scoring four fifties in the process. As a result, back him to lead the run column at odds of 6.50Bet €100 to win €65011/2Bet £100 to win £650+550Bet $100 to win $6505.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$6505.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp650-0.1818Bet RM100 to win RM650  with BetFred.

Gayle was in prime form at Bristol as he took apart the England attack. The 38-year-old looked poised to notch his 23rd one-day century, but was run out six runs short of the milestone. His striking has been impressive since arriving for the limited-overs part of the tour.

However, this could well be his last action in England and he will be determined to bow out with another century to his name. Gayle has taken apart the Three Lions’ opening bowlers, but has looked troubled in the middle overs. His inability to run between the wickets could be an issue at The Oval given the size of the ground.

Even the 38-year-old cannot hit boundaries with every ball of his innings. Therefore it could be set for a player such as Shai Hope to lead the run column. The 25-year-old was outstanding in the Test series, especially at Headingley in his record-breaking match.

He has not been able to kick on during the ODI series, making 55 runs in his two innings. The onus will not be on striking big hits at The Oval, which will give him the opportunity to nudge the ball around the ground. Therefore backing Hope at odds of 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450  with William Hill to top score is in the option to take for the contest.

Woakes needs to find his form

Chris Woakes has not found his form since returning to the fold from injury. He had become England’s premier bowler in the 50-over format, but has struggled to find his rhythm.

With the Ashes in eight weeks, the 28-year-old will be keen to get back to his best. Woakes should be pencilled in for the start at Brisbane, but time in the middle is in short supply ahead of the series.

Therefore it will be important for him to get into the wicket column. Facing Gayle and Lewis at the top of the innings is not bad form of preparation. He should be able to find movement off the pitch and will be afforded some protection by the bigger boundaries at The Oval.

It’s an important match for Woakes to prove his fitness and his quality for the challenges ahead. He is more than capable of running through the Windies’ top order. Plunkett and Rashid are the form bowlers and will attempt to rack up the wickets once again for Morgan’s men in the middle overs.

However, the Woakes has good value at odds of 5.00Bet €100 to win €5004/1Bet £100 to win £500+400Bet $100 to win $5004.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$5004.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp500-0.2500Bet RM100 to win RM500 with Bet365 to lead the way for England.

Winner

England have the West Indies on the ropes and Morgan’s men should be able to go in for the kill. The Three Lions have dominated the Windies in their 50-over contests this season and that should not stop any time soon.

Their batting depth was crucial at Bristol as Ali’s arrival at number seven highlighted how difficult it is to stop England. The top order does not usually fail twice on the bounce so expect Morgan’s men to clinch the series at The Oval at odds of 1.20Bet €100 to win €1201/5Bet £100 to win £120-500Bet $100 to win $1200.20Bet HK$100 to win HK$120-5.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1200.2000Bet RM100 to win RM120  with BetVictor.
