Big Challenge to Create Big Impression at Kempton
Our first day back yesterday, and the results were mixed; one impressive winner and one dubiously ridden runner who drifted suspiciously before the off. That is how racing goes, but luckily we managed to turn a profit on the day. Two more selections for you today.
6.45 Kempton – Big Challenge
Godolphin provided us with our winner yesterday and on Wednesday we again turn to the royal blue silks for one of our selections. Big Challenge is the pick and is the one raced, once victorious Sea The Stars colt who returns from a 161 day absence. He is running in an 11 furlong, class 3 handicap against some other unexposed rivals, and it doesn’t look like a complete penalty kick on paper, but the way that the horse won his maiden last year was impressive and being by Sea The Stars, plenty of improvement can be expected this year.
Big Challenge made his debut over 8.5 furlongs at Nottingham last autumn. He was partnered by promising jockey Josephine Gordon and was particularly eye catching throughout the race. Travelled strongly midfield before being produced perfectly by Gordon, eventually pulling away and winning by just over 2 lengths. The horse was given a break over the winter and returns over a longer trip which should definitely suit based on pedigree. Saeed Bin Suroor does exceptionally well with handicappers off for more than 90 days; 76/298 (25.5%) for £95 LSP, giving an A/E of 1.47Bet €100 to win €14747/100Bet £100 to win £147-213Bet $100 to win $1470.47Bet HK$100 to win HK$147-2.13Bet Rp100 to win Rp1470.4700Bet RM100 to win RM147 . Furthermore, the Newmarket based trained does very well with his horses who are running on the all-weather when they haven’t raced competitively on an artificial surface before; 114/312 (37%) for £87.42, for an A/E of 1.32Bet €100 to win €1328/25Bet £100 to win £132-313Bet $100 to win $1320.32Bet HK$100 to win HK$132-3.13Bet Rp100 to win Rp1320.3200Bet RM100 to win RM132 .
There are definitely some strong rivals, not least the very well bred, John Gosden trained, Frankie Dettori ridden Monarchs Glen. The 3 year old is son of the famous Frankel and went down by the narrowest of margins on debut at Goodwood last year before making amends and scoring at odds on over the same course and distance. Didn’t have to improve on form figures to score second time up and is likely to be even better again this year. Was a little keen last year though so the step up in trip has to be questioned. Take the 2.50Bet €100 to win €2503/2Bet £100 to win £250+150Bet $100 to win $2501.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$2501.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp250-0.6667Bet RM100 to win RM250 with Coral, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power about Big Challenge posting a big win.
8.15 Kempton – Papou Tony
Papou Tony comes into the 7 furlong, class 5 handicap at Kempton as the early market leader having scored last time out, and there are plenty of reasons to think that George Baker’s 4 year old gelding can follow up that performance with another victory on the back of a mini break. Baker is a wily trainer who knows the time of day in the betting ring, and he does very well when his horses are fancied.
Papou Tony has an affinity for Kempton, having won at the course twice, both times over 8 furlongs. Won last February after being gelded and after a generally quiet year, bounced back again this February, scoring by a length. The horse has been off for around 8 weeks and Baker does very well with his fresh horses; his runners 3yo+ runners off for 43-90 days are 33/222 (15%) for £70 LSP, giving an A/E of 1.32Bet €100 to win €1328/25Bet £100 to win £132-313Bet $100 to win $1320.32Bet HK$100 to win HK$132-3.13Bet Rp100 to win Rp1320.3200Bet RM100 to win RM132 .
The 7 furlong trip shouldn’t be a big issue. The horse ran over the trip on penultimate start at Wolverhampton but didn’t get a clear run and as such couldn’t show what he is made of. Bet365 and BetVictor make the son of Raven’s Pass a 5.00Bet €100 to win €5004/1Bet £100 to win £500+400Bet $100 to win $5004.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$5004.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp500-0.2500Bet RM100 to win RM500 shot, and if this race were over a mile, he would be closer to 3.00Bet €100 to win €3002/1Bet £100 to win £300+200Bet $100 to win $3002.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$3002.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp300-0.5000Bet RM100 to win RM300 . The odds are appealing and we follow the ‘Made In Chelsea Mafia’ in with his runner.
