Sydney-born Konta to Master Melbourne at Open

January 13, 2017

Johanna Konta is a clear value pick for the Australian Open.

The Australian Open’s men singles is stagnant from a futures betting perspective because of the dominance of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic but the women’s singles is ripe for a wager on one or more of the tournament outsiders.

Serena Williams heads the Australian Open women’s singles betting but she is opposable even at odds greater than those with which we associate her. Williams did not compete beyond the US Open women’s singles semi-finals last year due to a series of serious injuries and she did not cover herself in glory when losing to Madison Brengle in Auckland last week. In short, Williams is too short for someone of her age who has not played well competitively for about five months.

One may have made a mistake in picking Angelique Kerber to finish this year as the women’s singles highest ranked player. Kerber has been disappointing in the lead up to her Australian Open women’s singles title defence and, after seeing her lose to Elina Svitolina and Daria Kasatkina recently, one does not want to back her again.

Big-serving Karolina Pliskova is the Australia Open women’s singles third favourite. Pliskova has not gone beyond the third round in Melbourne despite making the main draw four times, although she did make the US Open women’s singles final in 2016. Pliskova is an interesting Australia Open women’s singles candidate but she was double her current odds this time last week and the value has been eroded.

Next in the Australia Open women’s singles betting line are Gabrine Muguruza and Simona Halep. Muguruza does not boast a good recent record on hard courts and she pulled out of the women’s singles event in Brisbane citing a thigh injury so she is probably not 100 per cent fit for the Australian Open challenge ahead. Halep is a money muncher for punters in big events – since the Wimbledon women’s singles three years ago she has reached just one of the subsequent nine Grand Slam semi-finals. Halep tends to lose to other highly ranked women’s singles players and, also, when she is a really short-priced favourite and she is expected to prevail.

The general Australia Open women’s singles sixth favourite is Johanna Konta and one rates her as the clear value pick at odds of 21.00Bet €100 to win €210020/1Bet £100 to win £2100+2000Bet $100 to win $210020.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$210020.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp2100-0.0500Bet RM100 to win RM2100  with BetfredLadbrokes and BetVictor. Konta warmed up for the Australia Open women’s singles by taking out the Sydney tournament impressively and, beating a series of talented rivals without dropping a set. Konta was born in Australia and her sister is married to an Australian Rules footballer so she feels right at home in the great southern land. Konta lived on Sydney’s northern beaches until she was a teenager and, as a result of her rising ranking, more Australians have become aware of her background. It is quite conceivable that the Australia Open women’s singles spectators will get behind Konta if she goes on a decent run in Melbourne.

Konta made last year’s Australia Open women’s singles semi-finals and, even though Friday’s draw was not particularly kind to her, she has nothing to fear from anyone right now. Konta may encounter Caroline Wozniacki, Dominika Cibulkova and Serena Williams in her quarter of the Australia Open women’s singles draw, with Agnieszka Radwanska and Kerber seeded to come out of the top half of the competition. Konta thrashed Radwanska 6-4 6-2 in this week’s Sydney title decider.

It is impossible to recommend a juicy Australia Open men’s singles play. Splitting Murray and Djokovic is impossible and dutching them generate a wager at odds of only 1.40Bet €100 to win €1402/5Bet £100 to win £140-250Bet $100 to win $1400.40Bet HK$100 to win HK$140-2.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp1400.4000Bet RM100 to win RM140 .
