Top Five US Open Contenders

June 11, 2019

Brooks Koepka will aim to become only the second man in the history of the US Open to win three consecutive crowns when the tournament begins at Pebble Beach on Thursday.

Koepka secured the fourth major of his career with a brilliant performance to win the PGA Championship. The American was dominant for the opening three days of the competition, and although he had a slight wobble on the final round, the 29-year-old closed out the victory two strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson.

He will now aim to clinch his second major of the season and take a stride towards the calendar slam by retaining the US Open. Last year, Koepka was involved in a showdown with Johnson for the crown, but had enough to see off his competition on the final day. Tommy Fleetwood made a charge, only to lose out by a stroke to the American.

There will be plenty of competition for Koepka, including Fleetwood, Johnson and Rory McIlroy. We’ll now break down their odds for the tournament based on their past performances at the majors and recent form on the PGA Tour.

Brooks Koepka

Can Koepka win a third US Open?

Koepka has been money at the majors over the last year. He holds the US Open and PGA Championship crowns, while he finished second at The Masters earlier this year. The only blemish on his recent record as finishing down in 39th place at The Open last season.

The 29-year-old is the man for the big occasion and relishes the pressure of the majors. He was outstanding at the PGA Championship, building an imperious lead over the rest of the field in the opening three days. Koepka made uncharacteristic mistakes on his final round, but his healthy advantage had given him a margin for error that allowed him to take the crown.

At the moment, Koepka is playing with such confidence that it will take a special effort for someone to stop him. He was solid in his last outing at the Canadian Open, ending the tournament on two-under. Koepka has not been prolific in tour event as he seems to always play his best golf on the big stage. Only one player has won three US Opens in a row when Willie Anderson achieved the feat from 1903 to 1905. Back Koepka to match his effort at odds of 10.00Bet €100 to win €10009/1Bet £100 to win £1000+900Bet $100 to win $10009.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$10009.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1000-0.1111Bet RM100 to win RM1000  with Bet365.

Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman laid down his credentials with a fine performance at the Canadian Open to take the crown. McIlroy was on pace for a final round of 59 in Hamilton, but he notched a bogey rather than a birdie on the 18th hole, missing out on the milestone. He still carded a nine-under round to claim the victory, handing him momentum for the US Open. The tournament was the first of McIlroy’s first major wins back in 2011 when he triumphed at Bethesda.

However, he has struggled in recent years, missing the cut in the last three competitions. McIlroy has not managed to add to his tally of four major crowns since winning the PGA Championship in 2014. There is pressure on the Northern Irishman to live up to his potential. It has been too long since he succeeded on the big stage and off the back of his exceptional display take McIlroy at odds of 9.00Bet €100 to win €9008/1Bet £100 to win £900+800Bet $100 to win $9008.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$9008.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp900-0.1250Bet RM100 to win RM900  with 888Sport to claim the US Open crown the second time in his career.

Tiger Woods

Can Woods get back to form?

Woods returned to the peak of the majors by winning The Masters in April. However, last month he was off the pace at the PGA Championship, failing to make the cut for the final two days of the tournament. The 43-year-old went into the competition at Bethpage Black without competing at an event since The Masters therefore he had difficulty with the rhythm of his game.

Woods returned to action at the Memorial Open. Although the American did not make a strong surge for the crown, he ended the competition on a high note, carding a round of five-under on day four to place in ninth. Woods has won the US Open three times in his career, the last of which came in 2008 when he defeated Rocco Mediate in a playoff.

His first triumph was one of the great all-time performances at a major as the American finished an incredible 15 strokes ahead of his nearest rival. It would be a surprise to see a similar standard of display, although he does have value to take the crown at 13.00Bet €100 to win €130012/1Bet £100 to win £1300+1200Bet $100 to win $130012.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$130012.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1300-0.0833Bet RM100 to win RM1300  with Bet365.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson remains the nearly man at the majors, finishing second once again at the PGA Championship. He wasn’t quite good enough to match the pace of Koepka in the opening three rounds. The American carded a one-under round of 69 on the final day, but his rival just had enough to edge the competition by two strokes.

It was the same story at The Masters when Johnson finished second, failing to match the pace of Woods at the top of the leaderboard. The form of the 34-year-old has been encouraging and he backed up his efforts at the majors with a solid performance at the Canadian Open.

Johnson has momentum to head into the US Open – the one major event that he has actually managed to win. In 2016 he was clinical on the course at Oakmont to secure a four-stroke triumph. It will take another decisive performance of that ilk to claim the crown again, although be wary of his odds of 9.00Bet €100 to win €9008/1Bet £100 to win £900+800Bet $100 to win $9008.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$9008.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp900-0.1250Bet RM100 to win RM900  with Bet365 given his performances at majors.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay has major potential

Cantlay has developed into a quality player and is in peak form ahead of the tournament. He proved his quality with a brilliant performance to win his first PGA Tour event of the campaign at the Memorial Tournament. The American blew away the rest of the field by finishing 19-under for the tournament aided by finishing eight strokes under on his final round. In his last four competitions, he has finished in the top-10. This run has included a ninth-place finish at The Masters and a third-place finish at the PGA Championship.

The 27-year-old has the momentum to take into the US Open and does not seem fazed by the big occasion. Cantlay has the ability to take the next step in his career to earn his first major. Given his form, he could be the one to challenge Koepka at the top of the leaderboard on the final day. Back him at odds of 19.00Bet €100 to win €190018/1Bet £100 to win £1900+1800Bet $100 to win $190018.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$190018.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1900-0.0556Bet RM100 to win RM1900  with 888Sport for value and as a good shout to triumph at Pebble Beach.
